Foreign language competence and content and language integrated learning in multilingual schools in Catalonia: an ex post facto study analysing the results of state key competences testing

The member states of the European Union have funded many initiatives supporting the teaching and learning of foreign languages. Content and language integrated learning is one of the experimental language programmes that have been introduced in Catalonia, in the north-east of Spain. The aims of this study are to analyse the results achieved by students on the state test of English language competence during the period 2009–2012 at (1) 1175 Catalan primary schools, (2) a purposive subset of 85 primary schools and (3) a school of reference (SoR), which applies a programme integrating physical education and language. The analysis indicates that the improvement of English competence occurs regardless of whether schools have participated in the experimental English language programmes. It is also showed that slightly better results can be observed in schools that apply the content and language integrated approach and a notable improvement in the SoR.

Echando la vista atrás: la voz del profesorado de educación física sobre su trayectoria profesional en una escuela multicultural

Este trabajo se adentra en un conjunto de escuelas con más del 50 % de alumnado de origen extranjero para conocer la manera en la que el profesorado de educación física, con más de 5 años de experiencia, percibe la evolución y el transcurso de su trayectoria profesional en este contexto (percepciones, sentimientos, actuaciones, etc.). Desde una perspectiva cualitativa, se ha llevado a cabo un estudio de casos múltiple (n = 12) en la provincia de Barcelona. Las entrevistas semiestructuradas y las observaciones no participantes han sido los instrumentos utilizados para la obtención de resultados, y para su interpretación, se ha recurrido al análisis de contenido. Entre las conclusiones más relevantes cabe destacar que, a pesar de todas las dificultades con las que se ha encontrado el profesorado participante a lo largo de toda su trayectoria laboral, la mayoría de este colectivo posee una percepción bastante positiva sobre su estado emocional y su labor profesional en una escuela multicultural, desmitificándose así la tradicional imagen social de esta escuela como problemática y conflictiva para el alumnado y el profesorado.

The main objective of this paper is to determine if a collaborative network governance structure in the management of sport practice in coastal areas generates better effects on the degree of sustainability of its territorial development. This paper shows the results of the analysis of the existing governance in the managing processes of 4 conflict situations generated by sport practice in 2 coastal protected areas, and the effects on the dimensions of its development in each case. The information was collected through indepth qualitative interviews with key stakeholders. Qualitative data was quantified by the definition of indexes of indicators to allow the comparison between cases. Results show that there exists a close relationship between the index of collaborative network and that of sustainability; that means that the greater is the degree of networking and the development of collaboration processes between stakeholders, the higher is the degree of sustainability of the development generated by the strategy of solution adopted in each of the coastal areas.

This book deals with the strategic policy planning process that underpins the development of successful national elite sport development systems. Drawing on various international competitiveness studies, it examines how nations develop and implement policies that are based on the critical success factors that may lead to competitive advantage in world sport. An international group of researchers joined forces to develop theories, methods and a model on the Sports Policy factors Leading to International Sporting Success (SPLISS). The book presents the results of the large-scale international SPLISS-project. In this project the research team identified, compared and contrasted elite sport policies and strategies in place for the Olympic Games and other events in 15 distinct nations. With input from 58 researchers and 33 policy makers worldwide and the views of over 3000 elite athletes, 1300 high performance coaches and 240 performance directors, this work is the largest benchmarking study of national elite sport policies ever conducted.

El Dr. Xavier Torrebadella i Fernando Arrechea (historiador expert en olimpisme i història de l’esport espanyol), acaben de publicar: Los orígenes de una ciudad olímpica. La vida gimnástica-deportiva en la Barcelona decimonónica.
Els orígens dels Jocs Olímpics de Barcelona 1992 són al segle XIX. La Ciutat Comtal va ser un formiguer de gimnasos en què el regeneracionisme va conrear l’educació física i tots els esports amb una intensitat poc coneguda, i des d’unes dates anteriors a les comunament acceptades.
Los orígenes de una ciudad olímpica es una obra d’investigació profusament il·lustrada que aborda les activitats gimnàstiques i esportives a la Barcelona durant segle XIX i principis del XX. És un estudi inèdit basat principalment en fonts originals, ple d’anècdotes i dades curioses.
